Curriculum Intent at Wood End Primary School

Our curriculum is designed around three guiding principles:

  • Knowledge is valued and specified
  • Knowledge is well-sequenced
  • Knowledge is taught to be remembered

As stated by OFSTED in 2019: “...know more, remember more and are able to do more.” We strive to ensure that our curriculum is ambitious, accessible to all, and deeply rooted in the traditions and identity of each subject. It is thoughtfully sequenced and carefully planned to make meaningful connections through learning.

We inspire children by providing essential background knowledge, equipping them with the confidence and enthusiasm to move forward in their educational journey. Our curriculum is knowledge-rich, exposing students to challenging content that is both well-specified and logically structured. From historical figures and scientific concepts to mathematical ideas and literature, each subject is explored through a carefully designed learning path that progresses from lesson to lesson, unit to unit, and year to year.

Using principles from cognitive science, we ensure knowledge is taught to be remembered. We implement strategies like spaced retrieval, low-stakes formative quizzes, and regular practice to reinforce memory and support mastery. We are committed to helping every child succeed in later life.

We believe cultural capital is vital. Defined as "the essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens," cultural capital introduces children to the best in human thought, creativity, and achievement. We aim to expose our students to valuable experiences, including those they may not otherwise have had access to. Cultural capital is embedded within our curriculum, not just as an addition through trips or activities like playing instruments, but as a core part of our teaching approach.

Our curriculum framework operates through three main stages:

  • Intent: We set out the knowledge and skills pupils should acquire at each stage.
  • Implementation: We teach and assess the curriculum in a way that helps children build and apply knowledge as skills.
  • Impact: The outcomes our pupils achieve as a result of the knowledge they have gained.

Ultimately, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils are well-prepared for future success, with the knowledge, skills, and cultural understanding necessary to become well-rounded and educated citizens.
